Sweet

This is an illustration I am working on for CCAD's Illustration Student Collective. The first gallery show will be held at 39 Below FroYo. The theme for the show is "sweet". I wanted to juxtapose rocker girls in leather and tattered clothes with bright ice cream cones. Though now, (last minute) I am having second thoughts about the illustration. I feel maybe the look isn't appropriate for  the family environment. So in true student nature I will be pulling an all-nighter painting a backup illustration and eating frozen yogurt for extra inspiration!

Fried Day!

Image Sources: 1.2.3

The idea behind Fried-Day posts are to serve as cheat day encouragements on the weeks most beloved day. Cheat days aren't limited to allowing yourself to eat what you normally wouldn't eat, but expanding that idea to refresh your mind taking part in whatever brings you comfort. So draw the bubble bath, pull out the wicker candles and unwind in that book you never finished,

Fried Day: Homemade Donuts

2 eggs | 1/4 cup white sugar | 1 teaspoon salt | 1 tablespoon warm water | 1/2 cup warm water  | 4 cups sifted all-purpose flour | 2 packages  dry yeast | 1 teaspoon white sugar | 3/4 cup lukewarm milk | 1/3 cup vegetable shortening | 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract | 1 cup confectioners sugar | 2 quarts vegetable oil for frying
  1. Pour 1/2 cup of warm water into a small bowl, and stir in the yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Allow the yeast mixture to stand until it forms a creamy foam layer on top, 5 to 10 minutes.
  2. Place milk and vegetable shortening into a small saucepan over medium-low heat and cook until the shortening has melted and the milk has tiny bubbles around the edge. Remove from heat.
  3. Place 1/4 cup of sugar and the salt into the work bowl of a large stand mixer and pour the milk and shortening into the bowl. Mix on low speed just to dissolve sugar; and allow mixture to stand
  4. Beat in the yeast mixture, eggs, and 1 cup of flour on low speed until smooth. Gradually beat in remaining flour to make a soft dough.
  5. Continue beating the dough on low speed until dough 2 to 3 minutes.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a well-floured work surface and knead 2 to 3 minutes.
  7. Form the dough into a ball and place into a large greased bowl. Grease the top of the dough, cover the bowl with waxed paper. Set in a warm place; let the dough rise 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
  8. Punch down the dough and roll out on a floured work surface to 1/2 inch thick. Cut doughnuts out of the dough with a 3 1/2-inch round doughnut cutter with a 1-inch smaller cutter in the center. Let the doughnuts rise on the work surface until  fluffy, 40 min to 1 hour.
  9. Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large saucepan to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  10. Gently pick up and drop the doughnuts into the hot oil, working in small batches of 2 or 3 at a time, and cook until the doughnuts are light golden brown, turning once, about 2 minutes.
  11. Drain the doughnuts on paper towels to absorb oil.
  12. In a bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of warm water and vanilla extract, and stir in the confectioners' sugar to make a glaze. Spread a thin layer of glaze over the warm doughnuts.

    Splendid Sorbet

I finally tried Jeni's Wheatgrass Pear & Vinho Verde Sorbet. Here is my "review" for the unusual flavor.

I can relate to Wheatgrass, Pear, & Vinho Verde Sorbet. besides the fact that no one can pronounce either of our names, I tend to share many of the same qualities as Vinho Verde. We were both born and raised in Columbus and even though we are proud of our roots, we are still one of the few things born in Ohio without an undying hate for Michigan fans. In fact, we have a lot of traits that set us apart from the pack.

Some would say we have all of the qualities to make a full blown out hipster but would never admit it. Don't get us wrong, We love main stream things, we want to belong we'd even join the going green club if we weren't so socially awkward. People don't really understand us. If we could, we would  have all the potential to be just as glamorous as our strawberry blonde friend, but we like to keep a low profile.

    Fall Fashion

    Illustration: Laia 1.Tights | 2.Necklace | 3. Polish | 4. Ring | 5. Shoes

Hi everyone! As you can see by the photos I am preparing for Fall and Halloween! I know it is only September but I am ready to let my hair down in the crisp Autumn breeze and roll up my cardigan as I carve a silly face into my pumpkin.
To celebrate my favorite time of the year I am now accepting commission requests for Fall festivities! I am currently working on custom paintings for Halloween party invitations, D.I.Y. Halloween costumes, Autumn recipes for food posts and Halloween makeup templates for makeup artists. My favorite part about Deep Fried Freckles is working with other bloggers to make a vision for a post come to life. I think fashion illustrations are rising and starting to replace photos for editorials. For more information Halloween Illustrations contact malia@iheartgarments.com

    Dolce Vite

Water color, ink, pastel, marker, graphic.

Hello everyone! I have been very fortunate to have had a great deal of projects
in the last few weeks and I can't wait to share them!

This week I was asked to create an illustration for Dolce Vite, a tea company
that uses no GMOs, no preservatives and no artificial colors.  To compliment
the company, I used warm colors and a natural faced, red headed beauty. Usually
when I use as many mediums as I did, it turns out looking crazy. So I am pleased
with its outcome and I look forward to seeing how the Dolce Vite Girl will be applied!

    Funnel of Love

The last day of the Ohio State Fair has put me in the mood for a strawberry covered
funnel cake. Though eating one always makes me feel bitter sweet ( pun intended)
because the only time I get this dessert is when summer is winding down.
Farewell summer and my confectionate friend, see you next year!

    Caprese Sandwich

    Caprese Sandwich Recipe

I am a self proclaimed "Foodie" who can not cook! Somehow every morning
I manage to burn my eggs while keeping them raw and inedible on the inside.
And lets not get started on my baking skills, or lack thereof!
(Example of a disastrous cake I attempted to make for my boyfriends birthday)
So I am proud to say I pulled off a dish this week when I played hostess at my job.
Granted, the dish required no baking and only four ingredients but at least my friends
can sleep tonight without dreams of Salmonella fairies dancing in their heads!

Do you guys have any simple go to recipes?

    Cupcake Taj Mahal

This year has been all about experimenting. From different
styles to different mediums. I always admired artists
who had the patience for cut paper illustrations.
I hated it at first but once I added chalk and pencil I began
to let loose and enjoy myself. This is definitely
something I want to revisit and try again.

    Relaxation

Last weekend was the calm before the storm.
Though I worked and did projects I also enjoyed a mini break
enjoying PF Chang's amazing honey shrimp while watching Netflix.
It was a great way to relax before finals.

    Just Desserts

Right now I am craving  a new colorful scarf to brighten
up my dull Tan, wool coat.  I always have a sweet tooth
for perky hues no matter what season it is.

    North Market

I went to North Market today. Instead of getting my usual waffle
and Falafel, I decided to try something new. I got my hummus
sandwich from Expressly, a vegetarian friendly Deli.
