1.2.3.4.5.

Happy Holidays! I think a great way to make a dress or outfit look more festive without going over the top is by wearing a shimmery bow that matches the gifts around the tree. Here are some cute bows that are perfect for the holidays yet also can be worn through out the year.

Awkward Contest

Hi everyone. It is that time again, another contest! I wanted to create an interactive post that allowed viewers to enjoy what Deep Fried Freckles is all about: creativity, individual style and quirky personalities. Oh! And fried foods, of course...but that will be another contest.

Growing up, I hated my freckles. I associated them with embarrassing moments and standing out. Now for those same reasons I love my freckles and I have come to terms with the fact that I will always be awkward! The Awkward Contest celebrates those silly moments that made you think "of course this would only happen to me!"

Submit your (PG) stories in the comments below and I will choose my favorite one to illustrate. Have fun fashion nerds!

Hiatus Over

Hi everyone! Today marks the end end of my first and last hiatus in the two years I have had Deep Fried Freckles. It has been a (good)hectic couple of months but I am sure all you hustling fashion bloggers understand! I have been keeping busy on Instagram and my other social media outlets but my blog has remained dry and for that I am truly sad yet promising it will never happen again!

First, I want to say congratulations to Shelly for winning the first giveaway! To everyone else, thank you so much for entering. My next giveaway will be in December so keep your eyes opened.

I have been working on the new website and shop that will be dedicated to fashion bloggers. I can't wait to launch it this December. I am very fortunate to combine my two favorite things in the world, fashion bloggers and illustrations, so if any of you lovely bloggers have suggestions for the new website I'd love to hear!

Deep Fried Freckles Goes to the Philippines

Well I didn't physically go, but I was there in spirit with hand lettering and a painting of a cute LuLu girl at the at Hip Pinoy Fair for LuLu Swing. The Hip Pinoy fair aims to bring together holistic, innovative, and passionate Filipinos to promote local ingenuity and creativity.

I feel so lucky to have had Isa Abonal approach me again for another illustration, I think the paintings colors and style make a perfect pair with LuLu Swings adorable new line of shoes in front of them!  Personally, my favorite are the Mustard Minuets, they are just a burst of sunshine.

I hope someday in the future to really travel to the Philippines. It would be a dream to paint all of the beautiful and inspiring things the country has to offer and to stop by the Hip Pinoy Fair of course!

Check out more photos of the Fair and LuLu Swings shoes on their Facebook Page

Sweet

This is an illustration I am working on for CCAD's Illustration Student Collective. The first gallery show will be held at 39 Below FroYo. The theme for the show is "sweet". I wanted to juxtapose rocker girls in leather and tattered clothes with bright ice cream cones. Though now, (last minute) I am having second thoughts about the illustration. I feel maybe the look isn't appropriate for  the family environment. So in true student nature I will be pulling an all-nighter painting a backup illustration and eating frozen yogurt for extra inspiration!

Disco Shorts & Frances Cassandra

Disco Shorts: Glamorous | Illustration: Frances

I have been wanting to practice painting leather lately and luckily Frances Cassandra emailed me about creating a portrait for her fashion, beauty and lifestyle blog. Frances combines femininity with skulls, studs and leather which is a suitable style for her musician aspirations. My favorite post: Editeurs At Large. Frances displays her style cred. with photos of her modeling designers such as Valentino for The Editeur! What an amazing opportunity and a deserving one of course!

Fried Day!

Image Sources: 1.2.3

The idea behind Fried-Day posts are to serve as cheat day encouragements on the weeks most beloved day. Cheat days aren't limited to allowing yourself to eat what you normally wouldn't eat, but expanding that idea to refresh your mind taking part in whatever brings you comfort. So draw the bubble bath, pull out the wicker candles and unwind in that book you never finished,

The colors she chose are so fun don't you think? And as a request, I am going to create and upload more portraits!

Game Day

It's Saturday in Ohio which means a day dedicated to college football, finger foods and beer. I guess you can say I am a cliche, stereotypical artist because I honestly have no idea what is going on while everyone is pulling there hair and falling to their knees over a play. But I will always support my states team and game day queso dip!

Fried Day: Homemade Donuts

2 eggs | 1/4 cup white sugar | 1 teaspoon salt | 1 tablespoon warm water | 1/2 cup warm water  | 4 cups sifted all-purpose flour | 2 packages  dry yeast | 1 teaspoon white sugar | 3/4 cup lukewarm milk | 1/3 cup vegetable shortening | 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract | 1 cup confectioners sugar | 2 quarts vegetable oil for frying
  1. Pour 1/2 cup of warm water into a small bowl, and stir in the yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Allow the yeast mixture to stand until it forms a creamy foam layer on top, 5 to 10 minutes.
  2. Place milk and vegetable shortening into a small saucepan over medium-low heat and cook until the shortening has melted and the milk has tiny bubbles around the edge. Remove from heat.
  3. Place 1/4 cup of sugar and the salt into the work bowl of a large stand mixer and pour the milk and shortening into the bowl. Mix on low speed just to dissolve sugar; and allow mixture to stand
  4. Beat in the yeast mixture, eggs, and 1 cup of flour on low speed until smooth. Gradually beat in remaining flour to make a soft dough.
  5. Continue beating the dough on low speed until dough 2 to 3 minutes.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a well-floured work surface and knead 2 to 3 minutes.
  7. Form the dough into a ball and place into a large greased bowl. Grease the top of the dough, cover the bowl with waxed paper. Set in a warm place; let the dough rise 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
  8. Punch down the dough and roll out on a floured work surface to 1/2 inch thick. Cut doughnuts out of the dough with a 3 1/2-inch round doughnut cutter with a 1-inch smaller cutter in the center. Let the doughnuts rise on the work surface until  fluffy, 40 min to 1 hour.
  9. Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large saucepan to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  10. Gently pick up and drop the doughnuts into the hot oil, working in small batches of 2 or 3 at a time, and cook until the doughnuts are light golden brown, turning once, about 2 minutes.
  11. Drain the doughnuts on paper towels to absorb oil.
  12. In a bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of warm water and vanilla extract, and stir in the confectioners' sugar to make a glaze. Spread a thin layer of glaze over the warm doughnuts.

    Blogger Illustration: Starry Eyed Beauty

An illustration for the ever so sweet Christine from Starry Eyed Beauty
Christine also made a request for a couple illustration, of her and her boyfriend Jeremy. Aren't they adorable together? Whenever I paint a couple I can't help but to smile! I just look at the photo, dip my brush and think "Ah to be in love!"

But any who, back from my hopeless romantic wanderings... I am a follower and fan of Christine's insightful product reviews. Christine even posts structured charts comparing products, which is great for a girl like me who always buys a tube of lipstick that should have been named "Icky shade for Malia." Starry Eyed Beauty is one blog to keep an eye out for as it rises!

    Stay Outside the Lines

Here is a glimpse of the coloring book I am working on. I plan within a month to bring the illustrations into Illustrator to create thick, clean outlines as opposed to my usual scribbled marks. But I hope everyone disregards their first grade teachers rules to stay in the lines. I mean c'mon! How can you explore and grow in life if you remain inside comfortable boundaries all the time?!

I have been creating custom makeup templates and face charts as well as drawings that focus on beauty products. My goal is to reach out to Blogger and YouTube personalities that post makeup tips. I think the illustrations provide a personality to the bloggers brand and how cool
would it be to have a makeup template of the model you are putting the makeup on!? For more information on custom makeup illustrations please contact me at malia@iheartgarments.com

    Splendid Sorbet

I finally tried Jeni's Wheatgrass Pear & Vinho Verde Sorbet. Here is my "review" for the unusual flavor.

I can relate to Wheatgrass, Pear, & Vinho Verde Sorbet. besides the fact that no one can pronounce either of our names, I tend to share many of the same qualities as Vinho Verde. We were both born and raised in Columbus and even though we are proud of our roots, we are still one of the few things born in Ohio without an undying hate for Michigan fans. In fact, we have a lot of traits that set us apart from the pack.

Some would say we have all of the qualities to make a full blown out hipster but would never admit it. Don't get us wrong, We love main stream things, we want to belong we'd even join the going green club if we weren't so socially awkward. People don't really understand us. If we could, we would  have all the potential to be just as glamorous as our strawberry blonde friend, but we like to keep a low profile.

    Soak up the Sun

    Stephanie's blog: Snacking on Sunshine

Stephanie is a Californian lifestyle blogger and believe it or not, the first client I have painted with sun kissed freckles! Stephanie's passion for writing, a healthy lifestyle and and overall optimistic look on life shines through on her blog. One of Stephanie's favorite parts about the illustration was her giant pearl necklace because Stephanie believes in finding the pearls in life. Stephanie makes a point to always keep moving and stay active but she always makes time to stop, relax and dip her feet in the sand.

Hi everyone! As you can see by the photos I am preparing for Fall and Halloween! I know it is only September but I am ready to let my hair down in the crisp Autumn breeze and roll up my cardigan as I carve a silly face into my pumpkin.
To celebrate my favorite time of the year I am now accepting commission requests for Fall festivities! I am currently working on custom paintings for Halloween party invitations, D.I.Y. Halloween costumes, Autumn recipes for food posts and Halloween makeup templates for makeup artists. Dolce Vite

Water color, ink, pastel, marker, graphic.

Hello everyone! I have been very fortunate to have had a great deal of projects
in the last few weeks and I can't wait to share them!

This week I was asked to create an illustration for Dolce Vite, a tea company
that uses no GMOs, no preservatives and no artificial colors.  To compliment
the company, I used warm colors and a natural faced, red headed beauty. Usually
when I use as many mediums as I did, it turns out looking crazy. So I am pleased
with its outcome and I look forward to seeing how the Dolce Vite Girl will be applied!
